Slow judicial system, lawyers frustrating anti-corruption war – EFCC

By NAN   |   27 August 2017   |   7:23 pm

Kazeem Oseni, the Deputy Head of its Ibadan Zonal Office, stated this at the 13th Biennial conference of Obafemi Awolowo University Muslim Graduates’ Association (UNIFEMGA), Ibadan Chapter.
The fight against corruption is being delayed by Nigeria’s slow judicial system and delay tactics by defence lawyers, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said on Sunday in Ibadan.
Mr Kazeem Oseni, the Deputy Head of its Ibadan Zonal Office, stated this at the 13th Biennial conference of Obafemi Awolowo University Muslim Graduates’ Association (UNIFEMGA), Ibadan Chapter.
His comments were contained in his paper titled “ Corruption in Nigeria: An overview and the Effort of the EFCC in Fighting the Scourge’’.
“The EFCC is committed to the anti-corruption war; we have made some progress but the operating environment has not been very encouraging.
“Issues bordering on legal technicalities, lack of cooperation from States and local governments and public attitude towards corruption keep undermining our efforts to tame the menace,” he said.
Oseni said that the commission was responding to the challenges by enhancing the capacities of its operators and exposing them to the requisite skills required for efficiency.
“We want to ensure that every investigation is properly carried out; we want to make sure that there are no escape routes for those found to be evidently corrupt,” he said.
The official called for massive support for the commission, pointing out that the EFCC could only work with information offered by members of the public.
“We all have roles to play, either as individuals or corporate entities. It is when we change our attitude and support the fight that it can succeed,” he said.
Also Speaking, Prof. Abdul-Afis Oladosu, a lecturer at the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies, University of Ibadan, suggested that only spiritual and morally sound persons be trusted with positions of authority.
“If we are to succeed in the fight against corruption, positions of authority should be restricted to people of sound moral standing. Unless we do that, it will be difficult to uproot corruption from its roots,” he said.
Oladosu’s views were contained in a paper titled: “Combating Corruption: Role of Religious Leaders’’.
The lecturer said that appointing people of questionable character was a risky venture and threat to the nation’s socio-economic and political growth.
He urged religious leaders to tighten their control of politicians, and warned them against compromising moral standards for earthy rewards.
The university don cautioned religions leaders and incompetent scholars against misinterpreting the scriptures just to justify their actions.
“Politicians engage in material corruption and religious leader engage in spiritual corruption. Politicians steal from the nation’s purse while religious leaders steal from God’s purse. These are all corrupt tendencies,” he said.
He said that any discussion on the role of religious leaders in combating corruption must begin with the monitoring of the attitude of any person seeking to occupy a position of authority.
“Knowledge of evil and refusal to combat it is double punishment,’’ the lecturer said.
Earlier, Mr Munir Ademola, Chairman of Ibadan chapter of UNIFEMGA, had said that the topic was selected to offer more insight into the war against the menace by the President Buhari-led administration
Ademola said that corruption was equally fighting back from every angle, and stressed the need to educate Nigerians on the efforts of the anti-graft agencies, the challenges and what was expected of members of the public.

Nigeria and Watford striker Odion Ighalo has been excused from next month’s World Cup qualifying match against Zambia. Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr left out Ighalo, who will attend his father’s burial in Nigeria on Saturday, 8th October – a day before the match at the Levy Nwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
Rohr released a list of 23 players invited for the match in the run up to Russia 2018. The Franco-German has kept faith in the squad that defeated Tanzania 1-0 in a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match in Uyo in September, but has recalled Arsenal striker Alex Iwobi who was not a part of that match. Rohr also called up Alanyaspor of Turkey defender Kenneth Omeruo and Belgium-based midfielder Anderson Esiti. Isaac Success who made a showing for Watford against Manchester United will be in Ndola for the big match. It is his first call up at the senior level

All invited players are expected to start arriving in Abuja as from Sunday, 2nd October.
On Tuesday Zambia goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene warned rivals that Chipolopolo should not be underrated as the teams in Group B get ready for the qualifiers.
The Zambians are in the group with Nigeria, Algeria and Cameroon.
The Mamelodi Sundowns keeper said, “We are in a tricky group but Zambia performs well when a lot of people have written them off. Even the teams we will be playing against like Nigeria and Algeria know that it won’t be easy to beat Zambia.”

Emmy Awards: Game of Thrones breaks record, takes haul to 38

The HBO series picked up 12 Emmys this season: nine awards in technical categories and three top prizes at the glitzy ceremony in downtown Los Angeles — television’s equivalent of the Oscars.
The blood-spattered, sex-filled saga about noble families vying for control of the Iron Throne took home the most coveted prize of the night, the best drama Emmy, along with statuettes for writing and directing.
That gives it a total haul over the years of 38 — more than any other narrative series since the first Television Academy prize-giving in 1949, overtaking the haul of 37 won by long-running comedy “Frasier.”
“We love ‘Frasier’ and he had a long run and we’re sure someone will come along and take it from us. We just hope it doesn’t happen until we’re all dead,” showrunner David Benioff told reporters.
It went down to the wire in the end, as “Thrones” drew a blank in the acting categories, despite being a hot favorite and having multiple nominees, and only set the record with the last prize of the night.
Three of its stars — Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke and Maisie Williams — dominated the pre-show betting in the supporting actress category, but the statuette went to veteran Maggie Smith of “Downton Abbey.”
Peter Dinklage missed out on a supporting actor trophy as did co-star Kit Harington, the favorite for his portrayal of “Thrones” hero Jon Snow, when Ben Mendelsohn picked up the prize for Netflix family drama “Bloodline.”
“The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” also glittered, picking up a total of nine awards this season, including the prize for best limited series.
“If your show doesn’t have a dragon or a white Bronco in it, go home right now,” host Jimmy Kimmel joked at the start of the three-hour broadcast, a reference to “Thrones” and the infamous car Simpson was in when he went on a wild ride through Los Angeles before his arrest.
The all-time Emmy list of winners — which includes nonfiction — is topped by NBC comedy sketch show “Saturday Night Live,” with 45 awards, one of them handed out Sunday to Kate McKinnon for best supporting actress.
– Emmy milestone for Louis-Dreyfus –
It was a night of recognition for old hands in the comedy categories, while the drama awards went to relative newcomers.
In the best actress in a comedy category, Julia Louis-Dreyfus won a fifth consecutive Emmy for her role as the hapless acting president on HBO’s “Veep.”
“I would like to dedicate this to my father who passed away on Friday, and I’m so glad that he liked ‘Veep’ because his opinion was the one that really mattered,” she said in an emotional tribute, her voice breaking.
“Veep” later picked up the Emmy for outstanding comedy series.
The award for best actor in a comedy went for the second year in a row to Jeffrey Tambor for “Transparent,” who pleaded with producers and directors to give transgender talent a chance in television.
In the tightest race of the night, lead actress in a drama, Tatiana Maslany won for cult sci-fi favorite “Orphan Black,” besting favorite Robin Wright (“House of Cards”) and last year’s victor Viola Davis (“How to Get Away with Murder”).
“House of Cards” star Kevin Spacey, a double Oscar winner who has never won an Emmy, missed out again for best actor in a drama, a prize which went to Rami Malek, the star of cyberspace security thriller “Mr. Robot.”
– Political night –
Ex-presidential hopeful Jeb Bush made a surprise appearance as a limo driver in a televised opening joke sequence, asking Kimmel what it’s like to be nominated.
Several stars took aim at divisive Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump, either in prepared jokes or in acceptance speeches.
“I want everyone to know that after careful consideration, I decided I’m going with Trump — which is why I’m saying we should get rid of all Hispanic and Muslim actors,” said award-winning comedian and writer Aziz Ansari.
“Transparent” creator Jill Soloway, who won a statuette for directing, likened the bombastic tycoon to Adolf Hitler and called him a “dangerous monster.”
– Glory for ‘People v. O.J. Simpson’ –
The win for FX’s “The People v. O.J. Simpson” for best limited series was the most widely predicted victory of the night, and the show — a scripted drama recounting the American football star’s shocking fall from grace — swept up acting prizes.
Sarah Paulson and Courtney B. Vance were rewarded in the lead acting categories for their acclaimed portrayals of sparring attorneys Marcia Clark and Johnnie Cochran.
Sterling K. Brown took home a statuette for his supporting actor role, while D.V. DeVincentis was recognized for the show’s writing.
In the battle of the networks, perennial leader HBO finished top with 22 Emmys — six on Sunday to add to its 16 from the Creative Arts Emmys ceremony last weekend.
FX, which scored the most nominations in history for a basic cable network, ended the night on 18 in total — twice as many as third-placed Netflix.

Pope Francis meets seven ex-prostitutes from Nigeria

Pope francis

The Argentine, who has repeatedly described the human trafficking behind much prostitution as “a crime against humanity”, sat down with the group, including four women from Albania, seven from Nigeria and six from Romania.
The other three hailed from Italy, Tunisia and the Ukraine, according to a Vatican statement. The women, all aged around 30, are being sheltered by a Catholic association in an apartment in the Italian capital after being rescued from their pimps.
The 79-year old listened for over an hour to the stories of the former sex slaves, “all of whom suffered serious physical abuse and live under protection,” the Vatican said.
The visit fell under what have been termed Francis’s “Fridays of Mercy”, whereby he carries out one unscheduled act of mercy a month on a Friday — mainly in or near Rome — throughout the pope’s Jubilee year, which started in December and runs to November.
In January, he visited a care home for the elderly and people in a vegetative state, while in February he went to a community for drug addicts. In March he toured a refugee centre before visiting asylum seekers on the Greek island of Lesbos in April.
The pontiff then spent time with the seriously mentally ill in May before visiting old and ill priests in June and dedicating his July “Friday of Mercy” to sick children in Krakow after praying for the victims of the Holocaust at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi death camp.

Toure won’t play until he says sorry – Guardiola

Toure yaya
Dimitri Seluk accused the City manager of “humiliating” Toure, 33, by leaving him out of the club’s Champions League squad at the start of this month.
The Ivorian midfielder, who announced his retirement from international duty on Tuesday, has not figured in a single City match-day squad since then.
“The day after that, his agent spoke and in that moment, Yaya is out,” Guardiola told a press conference.
“Unless Mr Dimitri Seluk comes back to the press or to his friends in the media – because he hasn’t the courage to call me, he goes to the media – and apologises to Manchester City first of all, then his team-mates and afterwards the trainer…
“When that happens, Yaya will be part of the group and he will have the chance to play.”
While Guardiola said that Seluk should say sorry for his comments, the club later indicated the manager wanted an apology from Toure.
Toure has recovered from a migraine that made him unavailable for Saturday’s 4-0 Premier League win over Bournemouth, but he will not be considered for Wednesday’s League Cup tie at Swansea City.
Seluk had said: “If he (Guardiola) wins the Champions League for City this season, then I will travel to England and I will say on television that Pep Guardiola is the best manager in the world.
“But if City don’t win the Champions League, then I hope that Pep has got the balls to say that he was wrong to humiliate a great player like Yaya.”
Toure, who is in the final year of his contract at the Etihad Stadium, has featured just once for City since Guardiola’s arrival.
– Cruyff respect –
He played the full 90 minutes of their Champions League play-off second-leg victory over Steaua Bucharest in August.
Guardiola added: “I cannot accept as a coach that every agent, when his player doesn’t play, goes to the media and speaks.
“I know how much Dimitri Seluk loves Yaya Toure. If he loves him, show me by apologising to Manchester City for what he said in the papers.”
Guardiola said that, as a player at Barcelona in the early 1990s, he would never have dared to allow his agent to speak out against Dutch legend Johan Cruyff, then the club’s manager.
“I cannot imagine in my day when a player’s agent would go to the media and speak against Johan Cruyff,” he said.
“Maybe it’s the new era, but I’m from the old generation, and an old-generation agent has to make his players his job and the coach his job.
“Today agents believe they are more than they are. If you have a problem, we can talk. Until he speaks, Yaya isn’t going to play.”
Guardiola said the decision to omit Toure from his Champions League squad had not been an easy one.
“It was so difficult for me to leave him out of the Champions League squad. So difficult,” he said.
“I know him and I know he’s a good guy. It was difficult as well for Aleix Garcia.”
Toure has been at City since 2010 and has won two Premier League titles, two League Cups and one FA Cup during that time.
While he will play no part at Swansea, captain Vincent Kompany could return, having not played since April after undergoing groin and thigh surgery.

Olamide the vetirane rapper to release a 6th album this year

Olamide
With such high flurry of activity, many are expecting the rapper to plug in a 6th album into his plans. On the shallow side, the rapper would need to keep up his track record for number of LPs, but he also needs to come back from the dismal reviews and lukewarm reception of “Eyan Mayweather”.
At the moment, Olamide is boss. The street rapper is credited for being the rap act in Nigeria who took indigenous rap from the confines of the hood and made it commercially ‘cool’ and viable. Five solo albums have aided this journey, but will a sixth one grace the country this year?
Olamide has a long history of albums, having set a precedent as the only Nigerian rapper to release five solo albums in five years, with a joint album making a 6th one.

The rapper began his long journey to this point with his first record in 2011, “Rapsodi”. This album was by far the most defining for the rapper. In 2010, a great representative of the street movement, Dagrin, had died in a tragic car crash, and a rising Olamide who had released the single ‘Eni Duro’ needed to fill the void. Moving his lyrics away from the hard life of the ghetto, Olamide dwelled on mundane subjects. Love, bragging, motivation and a lot more were thrown into the mix. This created a solid foundation.

2012 saw the rapper drop his first independent album, “YBNL” released under his newfound recording house, YBNL Nation. Songs such as ‘Voice of the street’, and ‘Illefo Illuminati’ gave him a cult following. This album was also instrumental in shutting down his doubters. Those muted doubts turned to admiration in 2013, as the rapper’s magnus opus, “Baddest Guy Ever Liveth was released. 2014 had the decent “Street OT”.
2015 was a special year for the rapper who first came together with his Eastern opposite number, Phyno, to drop the symbolic LP “2 Kings”. The joint album makes the record as the first Nigerian joint rap album. But the best was yet to come, as the rapper took on a brave project of releasing an LP with no features – “Eyan Maywether”. That album contained hit songs‘Eyan Mayweather’‘Don’t stop’, ‘Bobo’ and ‘Melo melo’.

Olamide has kept a robust profile in 2016, starting off the year by declaring war on the Mavins, claiming the mainland, and working with the Lagos State government. Also he has had to supervise the release of Lil Kesh’s debut album “Y.A.G.I” (Young And Getting It), and ensured that Adekunle Gold stays winning. All of these has not hindered his progress, as he has released the song ‘Abule sowo’, with a video to match. He also has countless collaborations already this year.

Justintime entertainment news reviewed the album, stating that “It’s been a great run for Olamide, five solo albums in five years is the stuff of legends. A classic album is also a feature of rap legends. With 'Eyan Mayweather' Olamide has not scored one, and unless he re-invents himself his stellar career might be short of a classic.”
He will need to come back with a better, well-rounded LP that can lay claim to classic status. Olamide has the talent to produce music like no other one can at his level, he combines lyricism with adept definition to create impressive work. That will need to be upped for the next album

Angelina Jolie files for divorce from Brad Pitt

Angelina jolie Pitt

According to the entertainment news site, the 41-year-old Jolie filed legal documents on Monday citing irreconcilable differences with Pitt, 52, listing their date of separation as September 15.
Two of the world’s biggest stars, they formed a Hollywood power couple second to none, so famous they were known simply by their combined first names.
The A-listers wed in France in August two years ago, but have been together since 2004 and have six children together, three of whom are adopted.
Jolie is seeking physical custody of the children, with visiting rights for Pitt, according to TMZ, which said she was not seeking spousal support.
Pitt came into the public eye 25 years ago with a much-talked-about shirtless debut as eye-candy in the hit movie “Thelma and Louise” — and went on to become a household name in Hollywood.
A three-time Oscar nominee for his acting, Pitt took home a golden statuette for best picture in 2014 as a producer of “12 Years A Slave.”
He has built a resume of varied film roles, starring alongside some of the industry’s other mega-watt stars: with Tom Cruise in “Interview with a Vampire,” Anthony Hopkins in “Legends of the Fall” and George Clooney in “Ocean’s Eleven.”
Jolie catapulted to stardom with her role in 1999’s “Girl, Interrupted,” taking home an Academy Award for best supporting actress for her fierce portrayal of a rebellious woman in a mental institution.
She has since played everything from a fairy tale villain (“Maleficent”) to a sexy video game heroine (“Lara Croft: Tomb Raider”) to the widow of assassinated American journalist Daniel Pearl (“A Mighty Heart”).
The red carpet darling is now better known for her humanitarian work than for her tabloid-ready actions, having served for several years as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
– Golden boy –
In 2012, she was promoted to special envoy and has visited refugees around the world, from Syria to the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda.
More recently, she has been a vocal advocate for victims of sexual violence in war zones, co-hosting a global summit on conflict rape in 2014 in London.
She also was made an honorary dame by Queen Elizabeth II.
She is one of the world’s most visible symbols in the battle against cancer, having undergone a double mastectomy and removal of her ovaries and fallopian tubes to prevent an aggressive form of the disease that killed her mother, grandmother and aunt.
The actress had been married twice before, to actors Jonny Lee Miller and Billy Bob Thornton.
Pitt, born to a middle-class family in Oklahoma, supported himself in early adulthood with a series of part-time jobs, including as a chauffeur, removal man and even dressing up in a chicken suit to advertise a fast-food chain.
But from 1987 the work started to trickle in, with bit parts in the television series “Dallas” and “21 Jump Street” and a few low-budget movies.
His position as a Hollywood golden boy was assured by his 2000 marriage to “Friends” star Jennifer Aniston, which made them one of the hottest couples in the world.
Pitt and Jolie fell in love on the set of action film “Mr & Mrs Smith,” although they didn’t get engaged until 2012.
In May 2006 Jolie gave birth to their first child, a girl named Shiloh.
Their joint fortune is estimated at over $300 million, and they are among the highest paid stars in Hollywood.
Jolie, the daughter of Oscar winner Jon Voight, made her directorial debut in 2011 with “In the Land of Blood and Honey,” an unflinching drama about rape as a weapon in wartime Bosnia.
Her fourth feature behind the camera, historical thriller “First They Killed My Father,” is being released on Netflix later in the year.
