Terry GSinger’s pardon by DJs not enough to revive his career
Terry G’s time at the top has passed, and now, with his own hands, he is ruining business outside the studio for himself.
Hurrah! Ring in the feasts! Terry G is no more banned by DJ’s all over Nigeria. The singer’s previous ban by The Nigerian Association of DJs, barring all DJs around the country from playing Terry G’s songs, has been lifted.
Terry G was in hot waters for slapping DJ Jimmy Jatt’s protege,DJ Phriz, who was holding down for the respected and veteran DJ at a comedy show that held at the Shell Hall of Muson centre. The singer had earlier apologized to Jatt, and this week, his ban has been lifted.
“The National Executives of the DJs Association of Nigeria (DJAN) humbly appreciate the support and cooperation of Nigeria DJs for full participation on said subject, we are most grateful for acknowledging the fact that ‘an injury to one is injury to all’, One Beat… One Voice,’ a statement from the body reads.
‘Terry G has shown a very reasonable level of remorse and had apologized to all parties concerned including apologizing to the leadership of the Association at all levels.
‘After due consultations and deliberations, the Deejays Association of Nigeria hereby lifts the ‘EMBARGO’ on all songs of Terry G (including songs he featured in). Thank you,’ it further read."
Although this pardon by the DJs is a significant step for Terry G, the singer’s problems are self-imposed.
Once upon a time Terry G was the lord of Nigerian music. The singer brought with him a pacey brand of music, which had novel elements including his signature bells, incoherent lyrics, and a heavy reliance on catchy beats.
But all of that is no more. 2016 meets the singer a shadow of his boisterous self, with his swashbuckling songs no more the toast of the industry. In 2015, he got signed to TGP Entertainment, and dropped the song ‘Totori’. That song, just like many others, failed to become a hit.
You can trace back Terry G’s last true hit song to his 2013 collaboration with Timaya on ‘Malo Nogede’. Tellingly, that was not his song. It was a part of Timaya’s catalogue. All others have either flattered to deceive, or sparked slightly, with very little follow-up. This has made him reliant on past glory, working every concert with his old songs, with nothing new worthy of a performance.
But how long can that last? How long will you continue to dine out on ancient pop songs, and thrill crowds to washed up hits from long ago?
Perhaps that’s why his performance on the night failed to ignite, hence he was disgraced off the stage, which led to him assaulting DJ Phriz. Who wants Terry G at their concert after this show of shame? Who needs a performer who comes with the added baggage of assault and unrest? Who would book a performer that has the potential to mar a concert?
That’s the pardon by the DJs would matter very little. Terry G’s time at the top has passed, and now, with his own hands, he is ruining business outside the studio for himself.
