Midfielder, John Mikel Obi has created his a new record following his appointment as captain of Nigeria’s Dream Team VI to Rio 2016.

Dream Team VI coach, Samson Siasia last week confirmed that the Mikel Obi would lead his side in the football events of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

The midfielder with that appointment, becomes the first Nigerian player to be captain of three different national teams at the same time.

Mikel Obi in March was appointed captain of the Super Eagles, replacing former skipper, Ahmed Musa who is now his assistant.

The 29-year-old has also been appointed captain of the Team Nigeria to Rio 2016, making him the first Nigerian to be captain of three national teams at the same time.

Mikel Obi who plays his football for Chelsea is the one of only two over-aged players at the Dream Team VI.

The midfielder’s dedication to the Dream Team VI so far have been impressive according to coach, Siasia.

Despite uncertainties with his future at Chelsea and a new manager at the club, Mikel Obi still chose to be part of Nigerian Dream Team VI for the football event of Rio 2016.

He joined the squad in camp last week and has been a figure head in training.

“Mikel Obi is the leader of the team, he has been fantastic on and off the field for us,”Siasia told Pulse Sports.

“He trains well, talks to the boys and showing us his real worth as a leader,” the Bayelsa born coach added.

Speaking after he was named captain of Team Nigeria, Mikel Obi described it as ‘overwhelming’.

"First and foremost, I will say I am overwhelmed with this opportunity to be the captain of Team Nigeria to the Rio Olympics,” the Chelsea media told the official website of theNigeria Football Federation (NFF).
